AIA Eastern Pennsylvania 2003
Design Awards Programs Institutional Category Award of Merit: Kennett
Middle School Jury Comments: This building has a dynamic plan & good organization. Its massing & elevations are well articulated & manage to unify this very large complex. The architectural vocabulary at the entrance reads as a school w/ its marvelous tower as a visual focus. The dining court creates a very pleasant outdoor space & articulation of the building. Award of Excellence: McGowan Student Center Architect: Breslin Ridyard Fadero Architects, Project Architect Robin Breslin Client: Mount Saint Marys College & Seminary Contractor: McCoy Brothers, Inc. Jury Comments: This
project is not just about the building but improves the campus by creating
well-defined public space. A tired old modernist building is transformed
into a building of great integrity that compliments the historic architecture
of the campus. The use of traditional campus materials of limestone &
fieldstone are handled in a fresh & elegant manner. The dining rooms
& concourse are dramatic, sunny, & lofty spaces offering views
to the fields beyond. Commercial Category Award of Merit: River
Grille Restaurant Jury Comments: This
project is a very effective use of a narrow, deep commercial space. The
restaurant is designed as a series of interesting rooms & dining experiences
including outdoor dining, dining at the bar, & dining w/ a view of
the open kitchen. Every space features unique furniture & lighting
in very attractive combinations. Award of Merit: Walson
Hall Jury Comments: The architects took advantage of the technological challenges of the program & the existing central space to create an open & unique interior. The rooms & infrastructure are cleverly inserted & thoughtfully placed into the existing structure. We enjoyed the scale of elements & variety of materials. Renovation Category Award of Merit: 447
Associates Building Jury Comments: The
architects completely transformed old structures into new viable commercial
space. Each tenants entrance is dramatically accented w/ cheerful
entrance towers. The new massing defines a previously confused massing
into a unified whole. Award of Excellence: Northern Lehigh Middle School Architect: The Architectural Studio, Project Architects Barry Brobst, Curt Santee, Janet Grazul Client: Northern Lehigh School District Contractor: Hollenbach Construction Inc. Jury Comments: This project updates & transforms an outdated school into a bright & cheerful building. The addition is particularly delightful w/ its interesting form & abundant natural light. The addition enlivens the courtyard. The jury appreciated the fanciful detailing which adds a layer of richness & delight to the building. |
