SUMMARY:World Architecture Day Movie Night: The Brutalist
DESCRIPTION:Event info: \nJoin AIA Eastern Pennsylvania for a special free movie night in celebration of World Architecture Day! We’ll be screening The Brutalist\, a visually striking and thought-provoking film that explores the intersection of architecture\, identity\, and resilience through the story of a Hungarian architect building a new life—and legacy—in postwar America. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to connect with fellow design enthusiasts and reflect on the impact of architecture in shaping lives and landscapes. \nDate: Monday\, October 6Time: Movie starts at 6:00 pmLocation: \nArtsQuest\, Frank Banko Alehouse Movie Theater. \n101 Founders Way\, Bethlehem\, PA 18015 \nFree admission. Limited seating. First come\, first served — RSVP encouraged! \n  \nThe Movie: \nThe Brutalist is a 2024 epic period drama starring Adrien Brody as a Jewish-Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor who emigrates to the United States\, where he struggles to achieve the American Dream. \nIn 1947 Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor and Bauhaus-trained architect László Tóth immigrates to the United States.  László travels to Philadelphia and is soon approached by Harry Lee Van Buren\, who wishes to surprise his father\, wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren\, with a renovated library at his mansion near Doylestown\, Pennsylvania.  It is a story of architecture crossing two continents\, the struggles of starting a new life with the hopes planted by a client to build the lifetime project. \n

The studio works throughout the United States on projects of varied scales\, from furniture and private homes to multifamily residential buildings. \n  \nBIO: \nAt Brent Buck Architects\, architecture begins as a conversation among clients\, architects\, consultants\, builders\, craftspeople\, and the conditions of a site. The studio emphasizes “we” rather than “I\,” seeking clear and enduring solutions shaped through collaboration. Its process often begins by hand\, through drawing\, observation\, and an engagement with the texture\, character\, and possibilities of materials. \nDrawing from recent work and the studio’s first eight years of practice\, Brent will discuss not only the ideas behind the projects\, but also the practical lessons learned while bringing them into the world. The lecture will examine how design ambitions are tested and strengthened through approvals\, budgets\, construction\, client relationships\, technical coordination\, and the realities of running a small practice. \nThrough built work\, ongoing projects\, and moments of uncertainty or revision\, the lecture will consider how an architectural practice develops over time. It will reflect on the value of patience\, adaptability\, careful listening\, and sustained attention to detail\, while asking how a studio can grow without losing the principles that shaped its beginnings. \n \n  \nDate: Thursday\, September 17th \n  \nTime: Lecture starts at 6:30 pm \n  \nLocation: \nNorthampton Community College \nDavid Reed Community Room Classroom Center 220 \n3835 Green Pond Road\nBethlehem PA 18020 \n  \n \n  \n  \nCost: $15 / FREE for students (Dinner will be provided) \n  \nDon’t miss this chance for evening exploring the formation and evolution of an architecture and interiors practice. \nThank you to our sponsors!
