AIA Eastern Pennsylvania, Fall Lecture with Brent Buck – Beginnings: Lessons from Practice

Join AIA Eastern Pennsylvania as we welcome Brent Buck, founding principal of Brent Buck Architects in Brooklyn, for an evening exploring the formation and evolution of an architecture and interiors practice. The studio works throughout the United States on projects of varied scales, from furniture and private homes to multifamily residential buildings.

BIO:

At Brent Buck Architects, architecture begins as a conversation among clients, architects, consultants, builders, craftspeople, and the conditions of a site. The studio emphasizes “we” rather than “I,” seeking clear and enduring solutions shaped through collaboration. Its process often begins by hand, through drawing, observation, and an engagement with the texture, character, and possibilities of materials.

Drawing from recent work and the studio’s first eight years of practice, Brent will discuss not only the ideas behind the projects, but also the practical lessons learned while bringing them into the world. The lecture will examine how design ambitions are tested and strengthened through approvals, budgets, construction, client relationships, technical coordination, and the realities of running a small practice.

Through built work, ongoing projects, and moments of uncertainty or revision, the lecture will consider how an architectural practice develops over time. It will reflect on the value of patience, adaptability, careful listening, and sustained attention to detail, while asking how a studio can grow without losing the principles that shaped its beginnings.
